Home network upgrade: Part 1: asus Rapture router

The purpose of this post is to document my travels as I swap out 2yr old BT hub router for a 2nd hand Asus Rapture GT-AX1100 which was kindly donated to me.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Test connection speed
  2. Documentation current router configuration and settings
  3. swap out old router for new one
  4. Wired directly to new Connection
  5. Configure new router with all necessary settings

1 – Test connection Speed

I’m looking to see some noticeable difference with this router as it’s touted as a gaming specific router, so the gains should be great…

I’m going to do a couple of tests one a generic internet speed test and the other using the linux cLI tool iperf to test network connection speed between my desktop machine and my media server.

Speed Test with Asus rapture

iperf with BT hub

iperf with Asus Rapture

The internet speed vary due to time of day and others on the network but I tried to make the test at the same time of day.
